interlocking floor
James C asked:

My house was built in 1958. The wood floor panels do not interlock. The contractor told me that the subfloor would have to be reinforced using shims and support because the subfloor support has come loose over the years. Now the floor squeeks where the subfloor has dipped according to the contractor. Is this the only way to prevent the noise before putting the stain and polyuerathene down?

Years ago the carpenters used to put black paper down between the sub-floor and the finished floor. 15 or 30 pound felt paper. This would help keep floors from “squeaking”. It does work. Have taken up many an old floor to find this. Also, check to see if the floor bridging is loose or even if it was put in. In a house of your age it should have it. It typically would be wood bridging placed in an “X” pattern between every floor joist nailed at top of joist and bottom of joist. This kept the joists from moving. If your house has sagged, in other words, the joists are not level, then you may have to find where the movement is and shim as needed or even provide additional bracing such as a beam support to bring it back to level. Since it sounds like you have put down the hardwood, there is no way to check the nailing on the old sub-floor. I have found in the past some old floors not nailed completely down. Had one recently. Usually the old carpenters back then did a good job of nailing them down but there is a rare occasion where they have missed nailing a joist or not put in enough nails.Usually a nail on the edge and 5 to 6 nails in the field.( 4×8 plywood) In houses that age they used to use 1×6 clear up to 1×12 boards nailed at a 45 degree angle rather than straight across the floor joist. This style was nailed with 3 to 6 nails depending on the size of board. This also added strength. Have also found some do-it-yourselfers who had put the floor down WITH the floor joist, not across. This will also cause squeeks. Have 40 plus years in the business. Father a carpenter, Grandfather, and so on. Hope this will answer your question and give you some insight on older homes.
